Event Description

Walter Anderson is a retired State Geologist of Maine, and is on the board of the International Appalachian Trail organization, specifically the Maine Chapter.  The mission of the International Appalachian Trail is to build and connect existing hiking trails of the Appalachian Mountains in their fullest definition, as they were formed ~250 million years ago during a continental collision, then separated in a continental break-up.  The "Appalachian" geology exists in North America, Greenland, Western Europe and Africa.  The IAT is composed of 23 chapters across this geology, spanning both sides of the Atlantic.  Through their trail building, the IAT hopes to connect the people in these places, and promote natural and cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and health and fitness.  The IAT in Maine uses volunteer work crews to extend the AT beyond Katahdin to the Canadian border, where it continues into the Gaspe.

Walter will talk with us about the geologic and recreation aspects of the IAT and demonstrate the role of geology as a framework for recreation.
